You are absolutely right -- how can we be all of these things to everyone? And yet the best of us manage to do a lot of hat tricks! But you do develop a love (?) of multitasking -- something that a lot of people don't think about because teachers, while they have a lot on their plate, generally get to do one thing at a time.

Thanks for that link to the spreadsheet about TEDTalks! I've bookmarked that. What a great find.Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-34110442940711611472011-10-20T21:23:22.163-07:002011-10-20T21:23:22.163-07:00Good approach -- I would hope these are the kinds ...Good approach -- I would hope these are the kinds of questions that you would get asked in an interview. Needless to say, it isn't very often.

Were you familiar with Mike Eisenberg before this video? He mentioned at the beginning one of the videos was on the Big 6 and, of course, he is one of the developers of that process. I really like what he has to say and what you imply -- this has to be a passion! I have to say that I'm not impressed with his idea of changing the name of the librarian and the name of the school library. We've been through this so many times before and we keep coming back to librarian and library or library media center.

I like the video about teacher education and 21 century skills - I wonder if the people who are making the educational decisions for us (are you listening Secretary of Education Duncan?) have seen it?

I think your next to last paragraph is a better summation and answer to the question of indispensability.Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-51075712861419027092011-10-12T13:15:29.394-07:002011-10-12T13:15:29.394-07:00What I think is interesting is that the fact that ...What I think is interesting is that the fact that his daughter had 150 friends immediately wasn't a little frightening. He is going to have to do a lot more convincing before I can imagine FB as anything but a extra curricular tool.

Will Richardson's blog is one I subscribe to. He has two teen-aged children and he filters a lot of his opinions about education through their experiences.

What was Carl suggesting regarding comic books in elementary libraries? Was he suggesting that librarians buy them? Did he talk about how they would circulate?

The librarian who was suffering from picture book burnout -- was tired of picture books? was tired of the picture books in her collection? felt the kinds of picture books being published were not good quality? I didn't quite follow that posting.Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-64006515045322949912011-10-05T21:30:21.277-07:002011-10-05T21:30:21.277-07:00I absolutely love the fact that you have consulted...I absolutely love the fact that you have consulted and collaborated with the librarian on this project. That is so meaningful.

Since you are going to buy 3 of the book carts and they will take a prominent space in your library, you might even want to consider something like the book carts that Sharon Cleveland linked to in Highsmith. It would give you maneuverability and the wood look would be not quite as industrial looking.

I can't quite tell -- do your moveable walls have wheels on the bottom? I assume they do from the concept of "moveable."

I like how you have expanded your idea for evaluation beyond the walls of the library itself - with a blog. I'm not sure you will get a lot of reaction but the whole concept of integrating yourself into the community is a good one.Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-25349696551219512292011-10-05T08:03:58.221-07:002011-10-05T08:03:58.221-07:00Laura,

We were just talking in a meeting the other day at school how it is so important to teach students where their information comes from as well as how to evaluate it. Ugh -- I can't imagine what a "Hollywood ending" would be for a book like this.

What an interesting blog posting on Livescribe Echo. This is entirely new to me and the ethical questions raised in the article are fascinating. Would be good for a Skype discussion in itself.

I'm listening to music as I read your blog. Would Treasure think that was a good idea?

Hargadon always has interesting stuff. I'm glad you pointed to this topic because this is one that I'm very interested in. I thought this comment by Wyatt was very profound, "students need some safe digital places to develop their ideas and identities."Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-53384703197008217222011-08-31T20:14:10.336-07:002011-08-31T20:14:10.336-07:00After reading your list of things you wish you had...After reading your list of things you wish you had known before becoming a librarian, I have to agree with the one about Web 2.0 classes and keeping up with the changes in technology and resources. Our libarians spend so much time researching, inservicing teachers and working with students on these issues it is a wonder they have time for anything else!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748602193427177793.post-62687855543709417022011-08-31T16:13:02.925-07:002011-08-31T16:13:02.925-07:00Laura -- I love your own list of "5 Things.&q...Laura -- I love your own list of "5 Things." That is wonderful. My comment on your comments:
1. Not only is the library in the middle of the digital revolution, many librarians are leading the charge.
2. Interestingly enough, AASL disposed of the title "media specialist" several years ago and reverted back to "librarian."
3. A course in Web 2.0 would have been nice but I feel confident that you can add the knowledge that you need as we go along. If you have questions, be sure to ask. We ALL started at ground zero.
5. The reason for your reading blogs, LM_NET postings, and listening to podcasts -- to see and hear how the profession is changing.

I would love to have a Skype conversation just on the the Sprankle reflection.

Writing a blog is not for everyone -- at least I don't seem to be able to do it after several attempts. Following blogs is for everyone.

The site for librarians with little or no experience sounds interesting but I wonder if it is out of date if it is talking about "gopher" which is very 1991.

Don't forget my link to the Hacker Handbook in the class syllabus which gives you almost everything you need to know about MLA and Web sources.

What an interesting podcast. You struck gold on your first try.Floyd Pentlinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10692480555499790736noreply@blogger.com
